bratton in our london bureau tonight. pete williams, our justice correspondent, continues to make calls and report this story out from our washington bureau. pete, what do you have? >> well, i was struck by what the police commissioner said about urging people to stay home. the fact that there seemed to be, at least as far as his information goes, two separate incidents in two separate places in boston -- one at the scene of the marathon, the other at the jfk library. and we also have seen a number of local communities raise their sort of alert level, putting more people on the street. and i am assured, though, by a couple of federal officials i've talked to, that this is not happening because of some additional information that something else is going on that we don't know about. that these -- the department of homeland security, for example, an official there tells me that it has not put out any kind of advisory urging local communities to be on a higher level of alert. that what we're seeing around town, or around the country, here in washington around town and around the country new

correspondent pete williams. pete, i'd like to go to you first, given what the president just said coming out and saying it is an act of terror does not come as much of a surprise, given the contours of this. but still something worth remarking on in terms of how the white house is handling this event. >> perhaps so. but this is a case of you know, do as i say, not as i do. or perhaps actions speak louder than words, is what i meant. the very fact that it was announced last night that the fbi was taking the lead in this investigation answered the question. because the fbi has jurisdiction in a case like this only if it's considered an act of terrorism. we crossed that bridge last night. with the words were used or not. in terms of the investigation, let's just clear up a couple of points that were confusing overnight. just two devices, there was a suggestion there were others because so many packages had to be destroyed. there was mixed information about whether any of them campaigned explosives, they did not. sports are starting to learn more about the kproe significance of the bomb. how it

. >> pete williams is with us with more on the investigation. it's your beat now. the fbi. >> let me pick up on that. we still don't know how many explosive devices there were. we know that two went off. there could have been others because packages found on the street were deemed suspicious. they were destroyed but we haven't heard any confirmation on whether at least five other packages actually were explosive devices. some officials say there is reason to think at least a few of them were but we still don't have confirmation on that. that's number one. number two, there is no suspect in custody. however, there are some people that the investigators are very interested in talking to. one of them is a young person who had a student visa who has burns and was seen running from the area. now, of course many people were running from the area and some were injured. so what particular reason there is to be interested in this person, we're not sure of. but nonetheless, that person is being aggressively questioned now. officials say two bombs that went off included shrapnel to multiply the injurie

'll get to nbc justice correspondent pete williams. as i turn to you, this news conference is going on, we know that officials did conduct two bomb sweeps in the area yesterday, one before the race and then one around the finish line they said about an hour before runners started to cross the finish line. what else can you tell us? >> despite the confusion overnight, they did not find more than two bombs, the two that went off, the confusion comes from the fact that as the bombs went off, people dropped packages they were holding and ran away. when police arrived on scene, they had all of these packages they had to check. they didn't take a lot of time. they simply destroyed them if there were any questions. some confusion last night that there were some unexploded devices. now they say that's not the case. as for revere, an apartment belonging to a student here who was 20 years old from saudi arabia, he was seen running from the scene, authorities say they did not find anything that search to indicate that he had any involvement in the bombing. he's been questioned all night. the interest

now with the latest on that investigation, nbc news justice correspondent, pete williams. >> lawrence, good evening. investigators know this attack involved two bombs. what they don't know is whether there were other explosives involved. at least five other packages found on the street were deemed to be suspicious and destroyed by boston police and bomb squad techs. there were many packages to check. people dropped what they were carrying and ran away. we have heard conflicting accounts about whether there were unexploded bombs. some say two other packages were found that contained forms of explosiv explosives, others say there were just the two bombs. that remains unclear. several officials say the bombs that did go off included shrapnel that multiplied the injuries, b.b.s and ball bearingings. they are looking at surveillance video to see if they can see anyone placing packages at the points where the bombs went off. they described them with crude and less explosive power. they stressed tonight there is no suspect in custody, but they are talking to a 20-year-old saudi man here on a

williams who is live in washington. pete, what are you hearing about the investigation to the bombings in boston? >> right. it's all about putting pieces of puzzles together. first of all, the devices themselves are here in the suburban washington in the fbi's crime lab where they will try to reinstruct them. they believe they were carried to the scene in black nylon duffel bags and say that because of the weight that each device probably weighed 20 pounds filled with gun powder and shrapnel and in pressure cookers. you can see the brand name of the pressure cookers in a couple of the pictures that we have obtained. the second part of it is the pictures themselves that they are asking people to send in and they are getting a huge amount, so far, three terra bytes of data that is thousands of hours of video and still pictures. they want more. this is from our affiliate in boston. it shows in the first picture what appears to be a trash bag next to the green thing is a trash container and looking at whether the bombs might have been place inside trash bags to look less conspicuous and a
